Pseudacris crucifer

One of the first true signs of spring in New England and nearby areas is the evening calling of the Spring Peepers. Snow may linger in the darker parts of the woods, but the ponds, free from ice, attract these handsome little frogs with their spring choruses. The residents of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, call these creatures Pinkletinks.
Look For : A small, light to dark brown frog with an X-shaped dark mark on its back. Call is a "peep" or "preep" in a short trill, given once a second.
Length : 3/4-1 1/2".
Habitat : Ponds and swamps in woodlands.
Range : Eastern Canada and U.S.
