Red-legged Frog

Listen closely or you may miss the calls of the Red-legged Frog. Although it can grow to an impressive size, this handsome frog has weak call notes. On top of that, it likes to call while underwater, and then the notes are even harder to hear. Its short spring breeding season lasts one to two weeks. This frog is endangered.

Look For : A gray to reddish-brown frog with 2 distinct ridges down its back. Yellowish below, with red on its hind legs. Call is a series of weak grunts.

Length : 2-5".

Habitat : Ponds with vegetation; also moist woods.

Range : Southern British Columbia and far western U.S.
