Ambystoma opacum

In early fall, long after other mole salamanders have disappeared from the scene, Marbled Salamanders mate and lay their eggs. The eggs are laid in low areas that have dried out during the summer. The female Marbled guards the eggs through the fall or winter, when rains flood the eggs and allow them to hatch.
Look For : A stocky, blackish salamander with bold white to silvery crossbands above; male pattern is brighter; black below.
Length : 3 1/2-5".
Habitat : Moist woodlands near bodies of water.
Range : Eastern U.S., south of Great Lakes and most of New England.
