Hemidactylium scutatum

In the boggy areas where meat-eating pitcher plants and sundews try to make a living, Four-toed Salamanders crawl about in the soggy moss. Give yourself a pat on the back when you find a Four-toed -- it means you've been trying hard!
Look For : A small salamander with 4 toes on its hind feet, a reddish back, gray sides, and narrowing at the base of its tail; whitish below with black spots.
Length : 2-4".
Habitat : Mossy areas in bogs and other wetlands.
Range : Eastern U.S.
