Siren lacertina

Sirens have no hind legs. This fact and some other features of sirens make some scientists think they are not salamanders at all, but amphibians set apart from all others. Whatever they may be, sirens certainly are different. They will often give out a scream or howl if they are caught.
Look For : A very large, gray to olive, eel-like salamander with external gills and tiny front feet (no back feet). Body darker on top of back; sides with numerous small yellowish markings; tail has a fin above and below.
Length : 20-35".
Habitat : Shallow bodies of water with abundant vegetation and muddy bottoms.
Range : Southeastern U.S.
