Desmognathus fuscus

The dusky salamanders can be identified by the light line that runs from their eyes to the corners of their mouths. This species is the most common dusky salamander. Turning over flat rocks along streams may likely produce several duskies, which can be abundant in places.
Look For : A brown to gray salamander, with or without a dark-edged back stripe; a light line from its eye to the back of its jaw; the tail is keeled (a raised edge along the tail's upper side).
Length : 3-5 1/2".
Habitat : Springs and streams in woodlands.
Range : New Brunswick and Maine south to Louisiana.
