Pseudotriton montanus

The Mud Salamander is well named. The larvae live in muddy water, and the adults often live in mud burrows or under rocks on muddy stream banks. These habits help you to tell this species from its close relative, the similar-looking Red Salamander, which prefers much clearer water.
Look For : A stout, yellow-orange to brownish-red salamander that resembles the Red Salamander but has dark eyes.
Length : 3-7".
Habitat : Muddy streams and swamps.
Range : Southeastern U.S.
