Dicamptodon ensatus

This species, like others in the mole salamander family, spends most of its adult life underground. The adults are active and will bite and twist their bodies around if handled. The gilled, fin-tailed larvae are seen much more often. Lift rocks at the water's edge to find them.
Look For : A large, big-headed, brown salamander with black splotches above; whitish to light brown below.
Length : 7-11".
Habitat : Clear, cold streams and ponds and surrounding moist forests.
Range : Southern British Columbia and northwestern U.S.
