Callipepla californica

This is the comical little quail with the "topknot" on its head featured in Walt Disney movies, including "Bambi." Perched on a tree or a fence post, the male California Quail claims his territory by cackling and posturing. The entire family takes to trees for resting as well as for safety. After the breeding season, these birds gather together in large groups called coveys and often visit city parks, gardens, and yards.
Look For : A stocky, brownish bird; belly has scale-like markings. Curved plume on head.
Length : 9-11".
Habitat : Brushy areas, deserts, suburbs.
Range : Pacific Northwest, California.
