Colinus virginianus

The Northern Bobwhite is named for its well-known "bob-white" call given by males in mating season. Spends most of its time on the ground gathered in family groups or "coveys" of one to two dozen birds. Runs for cover and then freezes and "flushes" when frightened.
Look For : A small, brown-and-white speckled bird. The male's face is black-and-white, female's white with yellow-brown.
Length : 8-11".
Habitat : Brushy fields, farmlands, open woods.
Range : Eastern and central U.S., Arizona.
