Tyrannus verticalis

The Western Kingbird, like all flycatchers, sits on tree stumps and other exposed perches waiting for the right moment to fly out and snap up a passing insect. It fiercely defends its nest and attacks much larger birds, if necessary.
Look For : Pale yellow belly and black tail edged with white on the sides. The crown and back are gray and there is a dark line through the eye.
Length : 8-9".
Habitat : Rivers, grasslands, farms, deserts.
Range : Western half of U.S., in summer.
