Geococcyx californianus

The comical-looking Greater Roadrunner, made famous in the Warner Brothers cartoons, would rather run than fly. Twisting and turning in and out of cactus thickets, it can easily outrun a human. When standing still it may jerk its tail from side to side or up and down; it also elevates the bushy crest of feathers on its head when excited. The Roadrunner eats a variety of animal foods, including small snakes, lizards, mice, scorpions, and insects.
Look For : Long tail and crested head, rapid runner with sturdy legs. Runs with neck and tail outstretched. Short stops.
Length : 24".
