Archilochus colubris

Hummingbirds have dazzling plumage and are incredibly skillful fliers. They can stop short in midair, hover like tiny helicopters, and only hummingbirds can fly backward. Their wings beat dozens of times a second, creating a low-pitched, bee-like buzzing. Their food is flower nectar and insects.
Look For : A long, needle-like, black bill. The male is shiny green above, with a white chest, green sides, and a ruby-red throat. The tail is black. The female and juveniles are similar but lack the red throat.
Length : 3 1/2".
Habitat : Woods, fields, gardens.
Range : Summer: eastern U.S. and Canada. Winters in Mexico.
