Sturnus vulgaris

After centuries of living in settled areas in Europe, this species easily adapted to American cities after 100 birds were let go in Central Park, New York City, in 1890. Since then it has spread over most of the continent and sometimes gathers in groups of tens of thousands of birds. They can be very noisy, and sometimes damage vegetable or fruit crops. On the positive side, they do eat a lot of insect pests, such as locusts and certain beetles.
Look For : A short-tailed, blackish bird with glossy green and purple patches and a yellow bill.
Length : 7 1/2-8 1/2".
Habitat : Cities, farms.
Range : Widespread.
