Vanessa atalanta

The Red Admiral is a familiar species in backyards and parks across the country. In places where the winter temperatures don't dip below freezing this butterfly may be seen on the wing all year long. In midsummer it is not unusual to see admirals chasing each other or Painted Lady butterflies just before a thunderstorm or at dusk. During the full sunshine hours, Red Admirals are more likely to be found quietly drinking from flowers or fruit.
