Pyrgus communis

This is one of the most common skippers in the United States. Males patrol sunny openings and defend territories against anything that flies, including bumblebees and hummingbirds.
Look For : Often black with pattern of white spots, but this can vary.
Length : 3/4-1 1/4".
Habitat : Meadows, deserts.
Range : Widespread except northern states.
