White-lined Sphinx

Hyles lineata

The White-lined Sphinx emerges before sundown to feed on the nectar of flowers like lilies and jasmine. During the day, it hides on tree trunks and other surfaces, where it blends in perfectly. If it is disturbed, it takes flight, exposing its bright pink hind wing. When it lands on another tree, it folds its wings, which makes it seem to vanish in thin air.

Look For : Brown fore wings with criss-crossed tan-and-white bands.

Length : 2 1/2-3 1/2".

Habitat : Deserts, meadows, roadsides, gardens.

Range : Widespread.
