Papilio zelicaon

The Anise Swallowtail is a common western species that is frequently seen along roadsides and in vacant lots. This is because its favorite food plant, wild anise, is a weed that favors these habitats. If you disturb the caterpillar, it will suddenly sprout bright orange horns from just behind its head. These are called stink horns, and they give off a foul odor. This odor is supposed to tell predators that this caterpillar won't make a tasty meal.
