Hemaris diffinis

This is a day-flying species that is a frequent visitor to gardens with bright flowers. It looks like a large bumblebee when it flies, so predators leave it alone. When this moth first emerges from pupation the wings are completely covered with dark scales. When it begins to fly, the rapid buzzing of the wings causes most of the scales to fall off. This makes the wings transparent, just like those of a bumblebee.
