Magicicada species

These cicadas are unique in that they reach maturity together in huge broods. The nymphs develop slowly, over periods of 13 or 17 years, depending on the species. Then, within a few weeks, vast numbers of adult cicadas burst out of their nymphal skins. Their characteristic call, a buzz or whine, is so loud that it can cause damage to human ears.
