House Fly

House Flies are hard to swat because they react to movement five times faster than humans do. Sensitive hairs on their bodies send data directly to the wings, so these flies can take off the instant motion is detected. In humans, the sensory data must usually first be processed by the brain. Female House Flies live for about 26 days; males, about 15 days.

Look For : A gray body with black stripes along the thorax; hairy legs with adhesive pads on the feet; antennae with a feathery bristle; large, reddish-brown eyes; and mouthparts adapted for lapping up food.

Length : 1/8-1/4".

Habitat : In or near houses and farms.

Range : Widespread.
