Simulium species

Female Black Flies are biters; they suck blood from mammals and can be a major pest near streams, especially in spring. After a blood meal, mated females lay eggs above running water. The eggs hatch and the larvae fall into the water, where they attach themselves to stones in places where there is a moderate to swift current. The larvae and pupae often coat rocks to the point that they look as if they are covered with black moss.
