Tibicen canicularis

This loud cicada is most numerous in pine forests in the middle part of summer. This season is sometimes called the "dog days" because of the position of Sirius the Dog Star during these weeks, and this insect is named for that. The nymphs feed on pine roots.
Look For : A black-and-green cicada with transparent green fore wings. Call is an intense buzzing sound.
Length : 1 1/4".
Habitat : Forests.
Range : Northeastern U.S. and southern Canada.
