Gerris remigis

Patrolling the surface of almost any pond or slow stream are Common Water Striders, the insects that literally walk on water. Also known as Pond Skaters, these bugs don't float but instead take advantage of the water's surface tension.
Look For : A black, slender, spider-like body with extremely long middle and hind legs. The front legs are short and are used for grasping prey. These insects are usually wingless.
Length : 3/8-1".
Habitat : Surfaces of ponds, lakes, slow streams.
Range : Widespread.
