Corydalus cornutus

The male Eastern Dobsonfly's mandibles (jaws) look like long tusks. They are used to clasp the female while mating. Adult dobsonflies live only a few days. The larvae may live two to three years, provided they do not first become a meal for a fish.
Look For : Long, slender body and long, transparent, grayish wings with dark veins. Wingspan is almost 5". Female's mandibles are short and strong, quite useful for self-defense.
Length : 2".
Habitat : On woody plants near fast-flowing streams and rivers.
Range : East of the Rockies.
