Giant Crane Fly

Holorusia rubiginosa

This is one of the largest flies in the world. Giant Crane Flies are often attracted to lights at night. If one gets into your house and you want to remove it, handle it gently; the legs come off easily and can't be regrown. Males have a skinny abdomen with a bulge at the tip; females have a fat abdomen with a pointed tip.

Look For : Greenish-brown insect with reddish abdomen, olive-tinged wings, and long legs.

Length : 1 3/8".

Habitat : Moist areas: muddy woods and edges of streams.

Range : West Coast, Pacific Northwest.
