Little Brown Bat

Myotis lucifugus

It is too bad many people are afraid of bats, because they are amazing mammals and are usually harmless to humans. The Little Brown Myotis can fly, migrate, hibernate, sleep hanging upside-down, and find its way in the dark by echolocation. A single bat can eat 500 mosquitoes in an hour.

Look For : A small brown bat with short rounded ears and black wings, ears, and face.

Length : Body 2" long; 1/2 oz.

Habitat : Near lakes and streams. Summer: mothers and young in buildings; winter: hibernates in caves.

Range : Much of North America from middle Alaska south throughout most of Canada and U.S., except southern California and much of southeastern and south-central U.S.
