Lynx lynx (Felis lynx)

The Lynx's long ear tufts are like sensitive antennas, helping enhance its hearing. Its big feet help make it a powerful swimmer, and its thick fur permits silent stalking and speed through soft snow. The Snowshoe Hare is the Lynx's chief quarry, making up about three-fourths of its diet. The populations of Lynx go up and down, parallel to the population cycle of the Snowshoe Hare. Although the Lynx occasionally preys on domestic animals in remote areas, it usually poses no threat to humans or livestock.

Look For : A gray long-legged cat with black ear tufts and a short tail tipped in black.

Length : Body 24-36" long.

Habitat : Pine forests.

Range : Alaska, most of Canada, and south to Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.
