Canis familiaris

No one knows for sure when the dog became man's best friend. It most likely began tens of thousands of years ago, when hunters began making partnerships with wolves. Over thousands of years humans have bred dogs for certain qualities, such as good tracking skills or guarding abilities or for small size and companionship. Today there are hundreds of different breeds of dogs, ranging in size from the tiny Chihuahua to the massive Great Dane, most of which look nothing like the wolves they arose from.
