Long-nosed Leopard Lizard

Gambelia wislizenii

This agile lizard is active during the day. It darts from bush to bush in search of insects or lies hidden in the shade awaiting unwary prey. It frequently eats smaller lizards. Leopard lizards can radically change their color from pale gray with dark spots to deep chocolate brown. The change can take place in just a couple of minutes. Be careful with leopard lizards and collared lizards; these species have strong jaws and hold on tenaciously when they get hold of a finger.

Look For : Look for: A large, long-tailed, gray, brown, or pinkish lizard with dark spots and light crossbars.

Length : 8 1/2-15".

Habitat : Dry grasslands and deserts with scattered low bushes.

Range : Western U.S. from Oregon and Idaho to California and Texas.
