Thamnophis marcianus

On warm summer nights the Checkered Garter Snake can be found foraging for frogs, fishes, and crayfish. It is active during the day in the more northerly portions of its range. Although this garter snake is found in some of the driest regions in the country, it is usually found in places where there is permanent water.
Look For : A garter snake with checkerboard pattern on sides. Pair of black blotches on sides of head separated from eye by pale half-moon shapes.
Length : 18-42".
Habitat : Marshes, streamsides, pond edges, springs.
Range : South-central to southwestern U.S.
