Picoides pubescens

This small woodpecker is the one most often seen. It is frequently found in parks and gardens, and visits suet feeders in backyards. Like all woodpeckers, the Downy Woodpecker claims its territory by drumming -- rapidly beating its bill against a hard surface. Each species has its own drumming sound and rhythm.
Look For : Sparrow-sized, with a short bill. It is black and white above, white below, with bold white spots on black wings. The male has a red patch at the back of the head.
Length : 6-7".
Habitat : Forests, suburbs.
Range : Most of Canada and U.S., except much of Southwest.
