Actias luna

This moth, named after Luna, the Roman goddess of the moon, is one of the most spectacular-looking moths, with sweeping tails and feathery antennae. Unfortunately, it is threatened by the use of pesticides.
Look For : Pale green wings edged in front with purple and an eyespot on each wing; the hind wings have long, curved tails. The plump and hairy caterpillar (3 1/8") is green with yellow stripes and red dots.
Length : 3 1/3-4 1/2".
Habitat : Leafy forests.
Range : Eastern U.S., southern Canada.
