Common Green Darner

Nicknamed "Darning Needle," the Common Green Darner's needle-thin body seems dwarfed by its magnificent wings. The breadth of its wingspan helps to explain why this insect is one of the fastest-flying dragonflies.

Look For : A large dragonfly with a green thorax, violet-blue abdomen, and clear wings.

Length : 2 3/4-3 1/8".

Habitat : Ponds, streams, fields.

Range : Widespread; more common in the East.
