Apis mellifera

Like ants, Honey Bees are social insects. They live in huge, organized colonies of worker females and males, headed by one queen bee. These bees produce the honey that we eat. They are also pollinators of many fruit and vegetable crops.
Look For : A slender, hairy bee; brownish thorax is the hairiest part; the abdomen has orange-yellow and black bands. "Baskets" for carrying pollen are on hind legs.
Length : 3/8-5/8".
Habitat : Woods, fields, gardens.
Range : Widespread.
