Culex pipiens

The male House Mosquito feeds on nectar and other plant juices. It is the female that sucks blood from birds, reptiles, people, and other mammals. She needs the protein in the blood for her eggs.
Look For : Long, slender, soft body with light brown thorax; one pair of narrow wings; and long, thin, brown "beak," or proboscis. The male's antennae are more feathery than the female's.
Length : 1/8-1/4".
Habitat : Near swamps, ponds, and other bodies of stagnant water.
Range : Widespread.
