Pseudotriton ruber

Although this species breeds in streams, it may be encountered some distance from water. It usually is seen in leaf litter near spring-fed brooks or under nearby forest debris or rocks. It is particularly fond of earthworms, but it will also eat insects, spiders, and smaller salamanders.
Look For : A stout, red-orange salamander with numerous black spots and short legs and tail; its eyes are yellow.
Length : 3 1/2-7".
Habitat : Cold, clear brooks, streams, and nearby areas.
Range : Mid-Atlantic and southeastern U.S.
