Crotalus atrox

The largest western rattler, this diamondback is active late in the day and at night during hot summer months. It eats rabbits, rodents and birds. This species has a reputation for standing its ground when disturbed. It is sometimes called the "Coon-tail Rattler" because of the distinct black-and-white bands on its tail.
Look For : A large rattler with dark diamonds edged with white. Black and white banded tail.
Length : 30-84".
Habitat : Dry brushlands, rocky outcrops, desert foothills.
Range : South-central and southwestern U.S.
