Taricha torosa

During the rainy season the California Newt may be seen abroad during the day. Dry periods are passed under ground in abandoned rodent burrows. Like other Pacific newts, this species strikes a warning posture when threatened, revealing its brightly colored underbelly. In places where the California Newt and the Rough-skinned Newt both live, you will usually find the California Newt in grasslands and drier places, and the Rough-skinned Newt in forests where fog and shade keep things more moist.
Look For : A large newt, very similar to Rough-skinned Newt but with light lower eyelids and bigger eyes.
Length : 5-7 1/2".
Habitat : Ponds, streams, and nearby woodlands.
Range : California.
