Desmognathus monticola

This stream-bank dweller is never far from water, and quickly takes to it when disturbed. By day it hides under rocks or in burrows, dining on passing ants, beetles, and occasionally other salamanders. This species is one of the lungless salamanders; they breathe entirely through their skin. Always be careful not to handle salamanders if you have sunscreen or insect repellent on your fingers; it can damage their sensitive skin.
Look For : An orange-yellow to light brown salamander with wavy, dark markings on back; below, light gray to light brown and usually unmarked.
Length : 4-6".
Habitat : Edges of springs and streams.
Range : Pennsylvania to Alabama in Appalachian Mountains.
