Taricha granulosa

Rough-skinned Newts are more commonly seen than any other salamander in the Northwest. If they are disturbed, they arch their backs and raise their heads and tails, exposing the bright colors of their undersides. More than most salamanders, Rough-skinned Newts wander about in bright daylight.
Look For : A large, warty-skinned newt; brown to black above, yellow to orange below. Breeding males have smooth skin.
Length : 5-8".
Habitat : Ponds and streams and nearby moist grasslands and woodlands.
Range : Southeastern Alaska to central California.
