Question: How do worms know to come out when it's raining?
Answer : We found lots of sites devoted to our wriggly friends inside Kids!. In the
Worms category, we found a great site called
The Adventures of Herman. As it turns out, worms come out when it's raining for a very good reason -- they don't want to drown! As Herman tells us, worms live "where there is food, moisture, oxygen, and a favorable temperature." When it rains heavily, the earth fills with water, so worms have to come to the surface in order to breathe. But worms also depend on water to drink and keep their skin moist, so it's a tricky issue. Fun fact: the largest earthworm ever was found in South America, and measured twenty-two feet from its nose to its tail!
