This very lightly built meat-eater is an ongoing puzzle for scientists. Elaphrosaurus was very thin and lightweight for a dinosaur of its size - 20 feet long and almost 1,000 pounds lighter than similar meat-eaters - making it a very fast hunter.

It is reminiscent in looks of Coelophysis  and indeed has been linked to this family by some researchers. Since its discovery in Africa in 1920, placing it among the proper family has been difficult. In addition to Coelophysis  it has been linked to the abelisaurids and even allosaurids.
