Pinacosaurus was a fairly standard member of the ankylosaur family. It had many scutes, or bony plates, on its back and neck and had a bony club on the end of its tail that would have made a fearsome weapon against predators.

This dinosaur is considered somewhat of an intermediate genus, falling between the early members of the family and the last, more definitive ankylosaurs. It was not as heavily armored as its ancestors were. A discovery of a number of young individuals of Pinacosaurus, announced in 1988, seems to contradict the notion that ankylosaurs were solitary animals. A small herd of almost 20 individuals was discovered.
