Forty years before Tyrannosaurus rex was discovered, Aublysodon was thought to have been the fiercest North American hunter of the late Cretaceous.
It was a member of the tyrannosaur family and in fact, this smaller dinosaur has been mistaken for a young T. rex. Its name comes from the shape of its teeth.
Beginning in the 1960s, new material attributed to Aublysodon was uncovered, providing a more complete view of this dinosaur. An almost complete anterior skull was discovered, as well as numerous skeletal remains. There are now at least two other species assigned to this genus.
