Sarcosaurus was an early step in the evolution of the large meat-eaters. It appeared nearly 200 million years ago, in the early part of the Jurassic Period, and was a little larger than the earliest carnivores. Some scientists think it belongs to the family that includes Ceratosaurus and that its skull would have had the same small, horn-like, bony crest. Since no parts of its skull have been found, more fossil evidence is needed before it is known what this dinosaur looked like.
