Bed
Bed is a geologic term used to define a distinct layer of sedimentary rock.
Biped
A biped is an animal that walks mostly on two legs.
Birds
It would be impossible to put just one bird in a picture and say it is representative of all the creatures in the Avian family. Bird fossils have been found as far back as the Jurassic Period and there seems to be several different lines of development. In China for example, somewhat modern forms of birds seemed to have existed at the same time as more primitive forms found in Europe. Nothing is more contentious in the field of paleontology than the debate over whether birds evolved from dinosaurs or if there was a common ancestor between the two. The fact that recent discoveries seem to show some of the later Cretaceous dinosaurs had feathers has only bolstered the view that birds came from dinosaurs. It will be some time, however, before any concrete conclusions are drawn.
Bone Bed
A collection of fossil bones in one location.
Brachiopods
These were creatures that looked almost exactly like modern clams. They had two small tentacles to bring food into their shells. A very common fossil that formed limestone and marble.
Braincase
The braincase is the part of the skull that contains the brain.
Brontotherium
This large mammal lived about 34 million years ago in the Oligocene period. Its shoulders were 6 feet high and it was very much like a large Rhinoceros. Brontotherium belonged to a family of mammals called Titanotheres. Although it is similar to a modern rhino, it is not part of the same family. All the titanotheres vanished by the end of the Oligocene about 23 million years ago in an extinction event.
Brown, Barnum
Fossil collector for the American Museum of Natural History from 1897 through the 1950s. Together with Henry Fairfield Osborn, Brown was responsible for many spectacular dinosaur discoveries, including Tyrannosaurus, Triceratops and Brontosaurus.
