Children who bully sometimes target those who are different or distinct -- and, sadly, this includes children with disabilities and other challenges.
Parents and professionals find that if classmates understand a child’s disability, they may become allies in helping the child. The children may also be less likely to view accommodations or individual support as unfair advantages.
One of the best ways to teach children about a disabled or challenged classmate is to talk with them at school. It's a chance to explain why a child may look or behave differently than others, to point out the many ways a disabled child is like other children and to offer classmates tips for interacting with the child.
