Brothers star as teen idols in good, clean comedy for kids.
In "JONAS," the real-life Jonas Brothers star as Kevin, Joe, and Nick Lucas, the three sibling stars of fictitious rock band Jonas (named after the street they live on ... of course).
The down-to-earth brothers do their best to shrug off their teen idol status and keep life as normal as possible, but with throngs of adoring fans everywhere they go, even everyday tasks like taking out the garbage prove challenging. All of this makes for some pretty crazy antics, but fortunately for the guys, their biggest fans are their supportive parents; their younger brother, Frankie; and long-time friend Stella (Chelsea Staub) -- who are all quick to bring them back to reality when they get too big for their britches.
Jonas, Lucas, Midas -- no matter what name the trio uses, the result seems destined to be golden. It speaks to the Jonases' immense likeability that they can star in a show that's so entwined with their real-life selves (they don't even change their names, for heaven's sake) and still not come across as self serving. On the contrary, their charm and chemistry are bound to win over viewers who aren't already on the Jonas bandwagon.
"Fictional" band or no, it's impossible to believe that the show bears no resemblance to the brothers' real life, since their reputation for kid-friendly entertainment is well known, and the show's content is equally worry-free. Sure, it's a bit on the sanitized side, but anything else would be a huge break from character.
The series makes light of everything from typical family mishaps (ruining one of Mom's priceless possessions, for example) to the guys' woes over their celebrity status, and each episode underscores the benefits of strong family and friendship ties. Even parents may find themselves engaged by the brothers' easy way with comedy -- and with each other.
Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that this upbeat comedy series -- which will premiere on the Disney Channel on May 2 -- stars the Jonas Brothers as members of an ultra-popular teen rock band. While the show isn't necessarily based on the guys' real-life selves, their characters do have the same first names, and the "fictional" band's name is Jonas, making publicity for the Jonas Brothers an unavoidable byproduct of the series.
That said, there aren't any direct marketing efforts embedded in the show, and the content is as clean and kid-friendly as fans -- and parents -- have come to expect from the trio.
Families can talk about how society views celebrities. Kids: Why do we treat stars with such reverence? Do you think some celebrities are more deserving of our admiration than others? Who do you admire, and why? When stars are involved in scandals, does your opinion of them change? Why don't we give other professionals like doctors and teachers the same star status as we do those in entertainment and sports?
